RE: COMMUNITY SERVICE OPPORTUNITIES

Community Service is defined as identifying and addressing a social issue in the community. This requires students to look beyond themselves and reach out to an issue faced by our society today (i.e. poverty, abuse, elderly citizens, environment.) These hours will meet the requirement for the Florida Academic Scholars Award through Bright Futures.

Community Service becomes Service Learning when integrated with instruction through problem identification, research, implementation of solutions and reflective activities. Community service hours may be awarded to students participating in service learning activities and may be used towards Bright Futures when pre-approved.

Volunteer Service is defined as assisting where needed and does not necessarily address a social issue. Although these hours are not recorded on the transcript, students can keep a log of their activities for use when applying for college, job applications, awards and scholarships other than Bright Futures. Students can electronically log hours by registering on www.sweatmonkey.org. This is a free service.

INFORMATION FOR TEACHERS

The Community Service Connection (CSC) SEARCH provides a way for your students to review and select Community Service opportunities they will need to fulfill curriculum/graduation requirements.

The Community Service Guidelines for the Florida Academic Scholars Award - Bright Futures are provided in the Documents section of this web.

For teachers, the CSC provides a springboard to investigate Service Learning Opportunities for your class.

A phone call may be all is required to enlist an agency in a Service Learning activity for your class.

If you have retained an agency or company to develop a lesson plan for a class you teach please forward the information to Desiree Valdes so a data base of Service Learning Opportunities can be catalogued for future use.
