ABOUT PORTABLE DOCUMENT FORMAT files

Many documents on the internet have been converted to Portable Document Format -- often referred to as "PDF" format. PDF format files can be read by the Adobe Acrobat Reader software program (details below) .

The advantages of having files in PDF format are: PDF files are just like photocopies of the original document or publication. They can be accessed via web sites on the Internet. You can VIEW and selectively PRINT PDF pages -- recreating an almost "photocopy-like version" of the original document or publication.

To take advantage of this wonderful opportunity, you must be using the latest version of Acrobat Reader (FREE). BUT -- be sure that you DO NOT have any old versions of Acrobat Reader on your computer BEFORE you upload and install the latest version. (Otherwise, there WILL BE conflicts.)

It is highly important that you have the latest version (free) of Acrobat Reader to view these PDF's.

There are TWO WAYS to get this free program:

1. Go to http://get.adobe.com/reader/ Download and install the program.

2. Logon to IDEAS (you must first have an account -- employees of this school district only as it is an internal account -- ) Click on the Technology Help icon (in the District Folder). Click on "Software". Choose Mac or Windows (depending upon the computer you are using). Find Acrobat Reader. Click on it. Read the message and continue.

Once you're all set up with Acrobat Reader, you will be able to VIEW and PRINT the pdf files. To do so, find the file name (on the web page -- it will be blue and underlined, indicating that it is a hyperlink. Click on the name of the file. One of two things may now happen / be happening:

1. The file will save (download) somewhere onto your computer. If so, you might have to manually open the Acrobat Reader program. From within Acrobat Reader (version 4), find the file that was just saved, and open it.

2. The PDF file and the Acrobat Reader will both load automatically.
