Middle School Physical Education

Physical Education is an essential component of the total educational experience for all middle school age children. The grades 6-8 physical education experience is designed to assist students in developing an awareness and appreciation of their movement potentials and how to apply that potential to a variety of different sports and physical activities.

Senate House Bill 610 mandates that students in grades 6-8 are required to take the equivalence of one (1) semester of physical education in grades 6, 7, and 8. Middle School students attending Hillsborough County Public Schools are scheduled for the physical education course that is specific to their grade level designation. Certified physical education teachers are responsible for the delivery of the curriculum.

Grades 6-8 Physical Education Curricula and assessments are standards based and grade level specific. Content knowledge assessments are administered to students enrolled all physical education Physical fitness assessments are administered to students enrolled in physical education courses in grades 6 and 8. Formative motor skill and content assessments may also be administered throughout the school year as necessary for the purpose of curriculum focus, lesson plan development and to assist students in developing higher levels of movement competence. Content is taught through one, two and/or three week instructional units for each content topic. The duration of instructional units varies for each content topic based on individual student needs.

The Next Generation Sunshine State Standards for Grade 6 Physical Education focuses on Physical Fitness and Educational Dance/Educational Gymnastics. Educational Gymnastics is optional. Physical Fitness and Sportsmanship/Responsible Behavior concepts are integrated into all content areas.

  • Grade 6 Semester 1 - Physical Fitness, Educational Dance, Educational Gymnastics (Optional)
  • Grade 6 Semester 2 - Physical Fitness, Educational Dance, Educational Gymnastics (Optional)

The Next Generation Sunshine State Standards Grades 7/8 Physical Education focuses on Team Sports, Individual/Dual Sports, Alternative/Non-Traditional Sports, and Outdoor Education (Physical Fitness/Sportsmanship concepts are integrated into all content areas). Content is taught on a two or three week instructional schedule for each content area. Some content areas such as bowling may only require a one week.

  • Grades 7/8 Semester 1 - Track & Field, Basketball, Orienteering, Non-Contact Flag Rugby, Tennis. Physical Fitness and Sportsmanship/Responsible Behavior concepts are integrated into all content areas.
  • Grades 7/8 Semester 2 - Soccer, Flag Football, Volleyball, Bowling, Ultimate Frisbee/Disc Golf. Physical Fitness and Sportsmanship/Responsible Behavior concepts are integrated into all content areas.

Senate House Bill 610 also established criteria for exemption of the Middle School Physical education requirement through the following waiver process:

  • The student is enrolled or required to enroll in a remedial course. This refers to students that are enrolled in remedial reading and mathematics courses.
  • The parent requests a physical education waiver in writing to the school. This requirement may be met through FLVS physical education or physical activities outside the school day which are equal to or in excess of the mandated requirement. Physical activities outside of the school day that meet the requirement are those that are equivalent to 250 minutes per week for a minimum of eighteen (18) weeks during the designated semester. The parent is to request that the student enroll in another course from among those courses offered as options by the District. This waiver is intended as an opportunity for students to enroll in an elective course or accelerated course. It is NOT intended as an option for early dismissal.
