HELP Students in Transition Program

The HELP Students in Transition Program of Hillsborough County Public Schools is dedicated to meeting the educational needs of students who meet eligibility under the McKinney Vento Homeless Education Assistance Act. The HELP Students in Transition Program is a part of School Social Work Services, and consists of social workers, guidance counselors, tutors and a data processor. The HELP Students in Transition Program works in collaboration with schools to further their understanding of and meeting McKinney-Vento Homeless Education Assistance Act guidelines .The program works closely with all stakeholders to ensure educational stability for students.

PROGRAM GOALS

  • Eliminate barriers that prevent homeless students from access to public education
  • Improve daily attendance of students in homeless situations
  • Increase proficiency rates on all high stakes assessments
  • Increase the graduation rate of students in transition

PROGRAM SERVICES

  • Assist with McKinney Vento identification and school enrollment.
  • Assist with the development of an academic plan and post-secondary planning.
  • Collaborate and consult with all school staff about needs of all students who have been identified under the McKinney-Vento Act.
  • Coordinate transportation to and from "school of origin".
  • Facilitate parent educational workshops.
  • Provide academic support and tutoring during school hours.
  • Provide back pack, school supplies, and uniforms.
  • Provide bus passes or gas cards as alternative methods of transportation while waiting for an approval from the district's transportation office. This applies to transportation request submitted through the HELP Students In Transition Program Office.
  • Provide referrals to community agencies.

PROGRAM ACADEMIC SUPPORT

  • Collaborate with teachers to improve student academic progress
  • Provide in-service training to school staff members to increase their knowledge of the McKinney-Vento Act and the impact of homelessness on student academic success and social development.
  • Provide tutoring services and academic consultation
  • Linking and engaging parents in their student’s academic success
