Music

Every child, in every elementary school, has the potential for successful, meaningful interactions with music. The development of this potential, through numerous encounters with a wide variety of music and abundant opportunities to participate regularly in developmentally appropriate music activities, is the right of every child.

The Hillsborough County Elementary Music Curriculum provides a focus for music educators to ensure that a balanced and sequential program is offered in every school. The Curriculum is exciting and rigorous! Students learn through music making (singing, playing instruments, creating) and musical thinking (reading, reflecting, interpreting).

A summary of what students need to know and do in music is as follows:

  • Performing on instruments
  • Reading and Notating music

*Creation and Communication

  • Improvising
  • Composing and Arranging

*Cultural and Historical Connections

  • Understanding music in relation to culture and history

*Aesthetic and Critical Analysis

  • Listening to, Analyzing, and Describing music
  • Evaluating music and musical performances

*Applications to Life

  • Understanding the relationship between music, the other arts, and disciplines outside the arts.
  • Understands the relationship between music and the world beyond the school setting.
