Carla Bruning received Outstanding Principal of the Year
Carla Bruning, the Principal of Newsome High School received the Florida PTA Outstanding Principal of The Year Award. This award is given to a principal who promotes the purpose and mission of the Florida PTA and who encourages the use of National Standards for Parent/Family Involvement.
Diane McKee named Florida Teacher of the Year!
Diane McKee, a language arts teacher at Williams Middle Magnet School was announced the winner of the Florida Department of Education - Macy’s Teacher of the Year at a ceremony Thursday night. McKee was surrounded by her mother, father, her husband, two children, and friends, along with Superintendent Jeff Eakins and School Board Chair Susan Valdes.
"I am totally stunned. The finalists I’m here with are so impressive and phenomenal teachers. I can’t believe my name is the one they called. They are all amazing teachers who do fabulous things in their classroom,” explained McKee just moments after her name was announced.
Superintendent's Press Conference
Superintendent Jeff Eakins conducted a press conference on Wednesday, July 1, his first official day as the leader of Hillsborough County Public Schools. Mr. Eakins discussed his plans for the future of the district and stressed that the road to a successful senior year and graduation day doesn't start in high school, but begins the moment a student enters the classroom for the very first time. Board Chair Susan Valdes introduced Mr. Eakins and told the audience she was excited about the new direction he has planned for HCPS.
