RE: VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

INFORMATION FOR STUDENTS

"Service which is rendered without joy helps neither the servant nor the served. But all other pleasures and possessions pale into nothingness before service which is rendered in a spirit of joy" -- Mohandas K. Gandhi, The Story of My Experiments with Truth, 1927

The Goal: The Community Services Connection helps students find opportunities for meaningful community service. The agency information contained on this web site is provided as a service and does not constitute an endorsement of any agency or activity displayed by Hillsborough County Public Schools.  Please be advised that School Board employees are not present at any of the activities listed.  Parents and guardians are advised to make direct contact with an agency to obtain further information prior to their child’s participation in an activity.

Why it matters to you? Becoming engaged in community service activities provides opportunities to make a difference, to help others, to have your voice heard by adults, to explore careers and to feel good by helping others.

How it works:

  1. Students seeking service opportunities first need approval from their guidance counselor. All students who volunteer or participate in community service events are encouraged to maintain a log of all activities you participate in. Although these hours will not be recorded on your transcript, they can be used when applying for college, job applications, as well as awards and scholarships. Sign up on https://www.noblehour.com/ to electronically log your hours.
  2. Be advised that if you are attending a Florida University or Community College and plan on applying for a Bright Futures Scholarship you must also read and follow the Community Service Guidelines for the Florida Academic Scholars Award-Bright Futures.
  3. Search our database or sweatmonkey.org for a community service opportunity. The agency information contained in either of these websites is provided as a service and does not constitute an endorsement of any agency or activity displayed. Please be advised that School Board employees are not present at any of the activities listed. Parents and guardians are advised to make direct contact with an agency to obtain further information prior to their child’s participation in an activity).
  4. Students who participate in Service Learning projects through classes, clubs or community agencies are eligible to receive community service hours. Hours used for Bright Futures applications must be pre-approved.

So you are headed to a public Florida University: Please be advised that students working toward a Florida Academic Scholars award through the Bright Futures program must consult with their school guidance counselor prior to engaging in any community service.

Or you are going to university outside of Florida: Most colleges and universities expect you to have done some form of community service, that is, something in addition to making good grades and excelling at athletics or art. The more you give of yourself the more you are likely to receive when you are being considered for admission and scholarship opportunities.

Or you are not going to college… Not college bound? Studies indicate that most students educated in Tampa Bay high schools remain long term residents of Tampa Bay. If you are going to spend most of your time here, doing community service, even when you do not have to, may prove rewarding in whatever path you take in life.

Or you are leaving town once you graduate: Doing community service now can provide you with skills such as finding out strengths you did not realize you possessed, learning to make the most with limited resources or how to get along with and care about people you would never have otherwise known. So regardless of where you make your home, doing community service now can prove bountiful in unanticipated ways.

How it works:

  1. Read the Community Service Guidelines for the Florida Academic Scholars Award - Bright Futures.
  2. Search our database for a community service opportunity. (The agency information contained on this web site is provided as a service and does not constitute an endorsement of any agency or activity displayed by Hillsborough County Public Schools.  Please be advised that School Board employees are not present at any of the activities listed.  Parents and guardians are advised to make direct contact with an agency to obtain further information prior to their child’s participation in an activity.)
  3. If you find one and you want more information, contact the "Contact Person" for that Community Service opportunity.
  4. Discuss areas of interest with your guidance counselor.

Good luck and Congratulations!
