Tampa, Fla. – (January 5, 2016) – A higher percentage of students in Hillsborough County Public Schools are graduating, according to new information released from the Florida Department of Education.
State graduation rates for the class of 2015 were just released, showing an increase across the state of 1.7 percentage points over last year.
Hillsborough County Public Schools went up 2.5 percentage points over last year, increasing the graduation rate to 76%. Increasing graduation rates is one of the four strategic priorities for the School Board and the district.
“We will celebrate the increase of our graduation rates across all of our schools from kindergarten through high school. We know all of the great work that is being done in our schools is with the same vision of getting students on track to graduation and preparing them for life,” said Jeff Eakins, Superintendent of Hillsborough County Public Schools.
Many of our schools made significant strides including Plant City High School which went up 19 percentage points in five years. Middleton High School had an 8 percentage point increase in one year and a total of 15 percentage points since 2011. Wharton High School had similar growth, increasing 7 percentage points since last year and 14 percentage points from 2011.
Our graduation rate for both our Hispanic students and our African-American students increased 4 percentage points in one year, further closing the achievement gap.
District staff continually monitor leading indicators for graduation success. This year, with our 9th grade on track to graduation initiative, our teachers and staff are working with students to identify challenges sooner and address them. Our performance indicators begin with the ABC's of students’ success, monitoring attendance, behavior, and course performance of our students.
