South County Career Center unveils program murals created by students under the direction of local artist Michael Parker

Murals make bold statement at South County Career Center

January 06, 2016

In 2013, Michael Parker, a local artist, was awarded the Carolyn Heller Visual Art award through the Hillsborough Arts Council.  His project would take him to Ruskin and the South County Career Center, where over the course of the next two years, he would work with several SCCC students to conceptualize and produce three huge, colorful outdoor murals that reflect the programs offered on the campus.  South County Career Center (SCCC) is located at 2810 John Sherman Way in Ruskin, and is the southernmost HCPS campus in the county.  The overall purpose of SCCC is to provide quality performance-based career preparation programs and training facilities for at-risk youth.  The school is designed to operate on a regular school year calendar and the primary goal is to provide all students with the opportunity to earn a high school diploma while learning a trade. At the same time, students prepare to enter the local workforce or postsecondary technical training.

The school recently celebrated the unveiling of the murals, which are three large medallions.  The medallions feature renderings of actual students that attended the school and they also showcase imagery representing the programs that SCCC offers, including Army JROTC, Automotive Service Technology, Building Construction Technology, Certified Medical Administrative Assistant, Culinary Arts, and the Teen Parenting Program.  The project was undertaken in order to give students an opportunity to learn about art; to encourage them to take pride in their school, and to showcase what students can accomplish.  In addition to creating the murals themselves, the Building and Construction instructor and students built the mural stands that are now directly in front of the SCCC.  Principal Tibor Kovacs and his faculty and staff, promote “The Power of One” and how one person can make a difference.

Please enjoy the Flickr album below which contains photos of the murals, the artist himself, and some of the students who were the inspiration for the murals, including Sgt. Edy Morales who is the JROTC Cadet of the Year at SCCC.  For more information about South County Career Center, visit the school’s website at http://sccc.mysdhc.org/ .
