Alonso instructional leadership team earns honors

January 11, 2016

Alonso High School is one of the largest schools in Hillsborough County Public Schools. The school’s Instructional Leadership Team (ILT) is a cross-curricular team focused on implementing a system of professional learning and support to improve results for all learners. Alonso’s ILT has won the 2015 Shirley Hord Learning Team Award, presented annually in celebration of a learning team that reflects “Learning Forward's” definition of professional learning. According to Larissa McCoy Mitti, Assistant Principal for Curriculum, “Our school’s ILT members have inspired their colleagues to open their classrooms for collegial observations; to collaborate across content areas; to plan with the end in mind; to share research-based instructional strategies that will assist struggling students; and to look at student work samples to track trends across the curriculum and to determine teacher professional development needs.”

"Hillsborough County Schools has made a commitment to being an innovative professional learning system, and this commitment is reflected in the work of the Instructional Leadership Team at Braulio Alonso High School,” said Learning Forward Executive Director Stephanie Hirsh. “The team’s collaborative leadership is contributing to a culture of continuous improvement that is improving teaching practices and student achievement."

Ten members of the Alonso ILT will be traveling to Washington, D.C. in December to accept their award.  Learning Forward Scholar Laureate Shirley Hord (for whom the award is named) said, “Congratulations to Alonso High School and its multiple communities of professional learners!! I celebrate you and your work for students’ success."

FOLLOW UP NOTE:

Having now returned from attending the Conference in Washington, D.C., Larissa McCoy Mitti, AP for Curriculum at Alonso, and part of the traveling contingent, is confident that having applied for and winning the Learning Forward Shirley Hord Learning Team of the Year award, “has validated the transformation that Alonso High School has made to adopt a culture of continuous improvement and learning.  With best practices for standards-based teaching and learning at the center of all that we are doing each day to enhance student achievement, we feel that this award has allowed our Instructional Leadership Team, and will eventually pave the way for other Instructional Leadership Teams, to trail blaze a path of change as we continue to teach our teachers, and thus our students, mastery of the Florida Standards.”
