Hard work pays off for 2016 National Geographic Bee champ!

June 03, 2016

He has observed the architecture of the Taj Mahal. He says one day he may be a National Geographic Explorer, but for now, Rishi Nair is the winner of the 28th National Geographic Bee. Rishi, a 6th grade student at Williams Middle Magnet School International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme joined 54 finalists at the National Geographic headquarters in Washington, D.C. to test his expansive knowledge of geography.

Rishi developed an interest for geography while attending Lincoln Elementary Magnet School International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme. When the time came in fourth grade for competition, “He was all in,” shared Jennifer West principal of Lincoln Elementary. Rishi’s elementary school teachers describe him as very bright and driven. “If Rishi sees something he wants, he is going to work for it,” according to Mrs. West. His mother fueled his passion by coaching his team while in elementary school and providing support that brought this driven young man to be the national winner. This young man’s passion for geography and dedication are evident.

Congratulations Rishi Nair on this accomplishment. Your drive and love of learning are examples of how hard work and determination pay off. Our teachers and school staff are always supporting our students as they work towards their goals and prepare for life.

Rishi received a $50,000 college scholarship and a lifetime membership in the National Geographic Society. He will also travel, all expenses paid, on a Lindblad Expeditions-National Geographic eight-day adventure to Southeast Alaska aboard the National Geographic Sea Lion, including a stop at Glacier Bay National Park, in recognition of the 100th anniversary of the National Park Service.
