Summer Series: Cupcake Wars Camp at Giunta Middle School
Students from various schools around the district recently attended the Cupcake Wars camp at Giunta Middle school. The camp taught students how to sew and bake cupcake from scratch. Students used their knowledge to compete in the Cupcake Wars challenge at the end of the week.
The four-day camp was conducted by teachers Maria Lazaro and Gia Devore, as students alternated between Lazaro’s sewing class and Devore’s baking class.
Lazaro taught students basic sewing skills like making pockets, attaching a waistband and how to make ruffles. They created cupcake themed hand bags and aprons.
“The students caught on fast,” said Lazaro. “They took what they learned and built on to those skills.”
In previous years, the camp only featured sewing. This year the baking portion was added. Devore taught students how to bake lemon, vanilla and chocolate cupcakes from scratch. The students also learned how to make and mold fondant icing into designs. After learning the basics, students split up into teams for a friendly competition of Cupcake Wars!
“Making cupcakes has been my favorite part at the camp,” said Britnee Blake, Orange Grove Middle Magnet student.
There was Team Chocolate and Team Lemon. Parents, students and faculty were in attendance to watch the students compete. Both teams baked and created colorful designs on their cupcakes.
The camp had a positive impact on students.
“I came to the camp because I wanted to make friends and learn different things,” said Sophia Terán, Giunta Middle student.
The students learned many different skills that they plan to continue to use after the camp.View Full Album
