Seniors excel in the Sheriffs Rising Stars Leadership Academy
Thirty three incoming high school seniors from Hillsborough County Public Schools (HCPS) were selected to participate in the Sheriffs Rising Stars Leadership Academy from June 8-12, 2015. This weeklong experience enabled each student to be exposed to principles that enhanced their ability to be a successful and responsible citizen.
In 2010, the Community Outreach Division, in conjunction with members of the Hillsborough County Sheriffs Office (HCSO) training division, Tampa Police Department, and HCPS, developed a leadership program to reward high achieving students who are juniors advancing to seniors in high school.
The experience was full of activities and examples of leadership to prepare these students for their school work and for their future careers. The week's activities included guest speakers, hands-on team building exercises and visits to the HCSO's Marine Unit, the Walter C. Heinrich Practical Training Site, the George E. Edgecomb Courthouse and the Florida Sheriffs Association Youth Ranch in Safety Harbor. The weeklong experience culminated in a graduation ceremony at the Falkenburg Road Jail Assembly Room. Upon completion of the academy, students received a $1000 scholarship administered by the Hillsborough Education Foundation. The Sheriff's Rising Stars Academy was funded through the Sheriff's Law Enforcement Trust Fund.
See your School Resource Deputy/Officer for application guidelines.
