Husband and wife team up in Veterinary Assisting program to pursue dream career

August 30, 2016

Husband and wife team, Lilly and Esteban Espinosa are recent graduates of the Veterinary Assisting program at Aparicio-Levy Technical College (ALTC). Both are employed by Turkey Creek Animal Hospital while working toward their career goals. Lilly, originally from South Texas, moved to Tampa in 1991.  She took classes through the Adult Education program of Hillsborough County Public Schools (HCPS), graduated in 1994, and went to work at USF. Esteban, an Army Recruiter and a National Guard member, graduated from Leto High School.

Although the couple held down good jobs in their past careers, they had always dreamed of working together while doing something they were both passionate about. That passion and goal was soon formed when they decided that a pet day-care business would be perfect for them.  The Veterinary Assisting program at ALTC would give them the proper training needed to launch their new careers.  Esteban recalled the first time they visited ALTC's facility, “The staff was willing to work with us to identify financial aid resources.  They battled for us to get us what we needed!”  In addition to using his GI Bill benefits, Lilly tapped into a CareerSource Tampa Bay training program, and in May of 2015, they both enrolled in the nine month long Veterinary Assisting program.  According to Lilly, “Our class at ALTC helped each other out – we had a great balance.  The instructor had faith in our class, and didn’t have to hold our hands.”

As part of the requirements for completion, the couple acquired hands-on experience at Hillsborough County’s Pet Resource Center and Turkey Creek Animal Hospital doing scheduled volunteer work.  The staff at Turkey Creek Animal Hospital admired both Lilly and Esteban’s work ethic so much, they offered the couple full-time positions after program completion and obtaining their certifications from the Florida Veterinary Medical Association.  They love the work, and feel strongly that every day on the job is preparing them for the journey of opening their own business together.
