Presidential Award Honoree, Kelly Zunkiewicz recognized for her work at Lennard High School
Former Lennard high school mathematics teacher Kelly Zunkiewicz, has been honored with the prestigious Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST).
Kelly Zunkiewicz has taught at Lennard High School for a total of nine years teaching a variety of mathematics courses, ranging from Algebra I to Advanced Placement (AP) Calculus AB.
According to the PAEMST bio, Zunkiewicz’s competitive attitude, deep content knowledge, and enthusiasm for her students produced a unique classroom environment where her students discovered how to complete high level mathematics without traditional lectures. Leading to a dramatic increase in student performance and female participation in advanced math courses.
Zunkiewicz credits her parents for helping her becoming a successful teacher. “I just want the best for my students, knowing how hard they will be pushed outside,” Zunkiewicz said. “I have high expectations for them and want them to succeed. At the same time, I have compassion for them. They know I care and understand why I am pushing them so hard because they see the benefit of it. They are wonderful kids and work really hard.” Kelly Zunkiewicz now works in the Bureau of Educator Recruitment, Development, and Retention for the Florida Department of Education.
The PAEMST award is considered to be the highest recognition that a K-12 mathematics or science teacher may receive for outstanding teaching in the United States and its territories. Roughly 200 winners were selected by a panel of scientists, mathematicians and educators following an initial selection process at the state level. Winners of this Presidential honor receive a $10,000 award from the National Science Foundation to be used at their discretion, and are invited to Washington, DC, for an awards ceremony, as well educational and celebratory events, and visits with members of the White House Administration.
