Number of students earning IB diplomas is soaring

July 07, 2015

Hillsborough County Public Schools pulled in a record number of graduates earning the prestigious International Baccalaureate (IB) diploma after completing the program and passing the exam. IB graduates are considered to be ahead of their peers across the country, garnering the attention of some of the most affluent universities.  Often a graduate with an IB diploma will find great mobility, transferable credits, and scholarship opportunities.

The number of students earning IB diplomas in Hillsborough County is steadily increasing. Several high schools have steadily built their IB numbers since start of their IB magnet program. Two relatively new IB programs,  Robinson and Strawberry Crest high schools, have seen successes at a greater rate in a short amount of time.

The results are as follows:

Robinson High School:  99%, up 11 percentage points from last year (88%)

King High School: 97%, up from 96%

Hillsborough High School: 96%, up from 92%

Strawberry Crest High School: 94%, up from 91%

“Our students have set themselves up for success. The IB diploma allows our students to develop critical thinking skills and a global understanding of issues. These results are unprecedented in Hillsborough County. We continue to provide a foundation that will allow students to attain their goals,” said Superintendent Jeff Eakins.

About the IB Diploma Programme

The IB Diploma Programme, for students 16 to 19, is an academically challenging and balanced program of education with final examinations that prepares students for success at university and in life beyond.

Students study six subjects concurrently. These include two languages, one subject from individuals and societies, one science, one mathematics subject, and one subject from the arts or another subject from the other groups.

In addition to pursuing these subjects, all Diploma Programme students complete three compulsory core elements that are essential to the philosophy of the program: the extended essay, theory of knowledge, and creativity, action, service (CAS).

Currently, more than one million IB students attend more than 3,700 schools in 147 countries.  To learn more, please visit http://www.ibo.org/
