Holiday Heros: Students mentoring students through Literacy-Civics service project

December 13, 2016

Former Forest Hills students, now at Adams Middle School, are getting in the spirit of giving back.  Students at Adams Middle have been mentoring Forest Hills Elementary students as a part of a Literacy-Civic School Service project that combines reading Sunshine State Young Readers Award (SSYRA) books and logging reflections on Microsoft OneNote. Students had the opportunity to be seen as young holiday hero’s by mentoring and tutoring fifth grade students, giving back to the school that prepared them to be ready for middle school.

According to Jennifer Aldrich the Media Specialist at Adams Middle School, the students “Are such a positive influence on their mentees.  It is a pleasure to work with them; I am so proud!” Fellow Media Specialist, from Forest Hills Elementary, Sandy Penvose added that “It’s been exciting to see the growth in our former Braves as they have advanced to middle school. Our students look forward to their weekly sessions. The support and cooperation with the teachers, parents and administrations have been so encouraging”.

In the words of one of the fifth grade students, “This has been great! It’s fun to read and reflect on what I read on the computer and I love the book. My partner has helped me with my reading and I can’t wait to start our SLAM project with the book!”
