HEF Classroom and Innovative Project 2016 Winners
More than 60 teachers were awarded the Hillsborough Education Foundation (HEF) Classroom or School Innovative Project grants for 2016. HEF Innovative Project opportunities encourage educators to create innovative and exciting educational projects for their students. With over $81,000 in funded projects this year alone, HEF, through the generosity of their many community partners, has continued to invest in the success of our students.
Nikki Schmidt, the Music Specialist and Technology Coordinator from Cleveland Elementary, received funding for several projects. “Because of the grants I received, my students will create recordings of their own music, continue growing their own fruits, veggies and herbs in our school garden and use coding to program a robot to play simple melodies on a xylophone. We're going to put the Arts into our STEM program to create some STEAM!” says Nikki.
For teachers at exceptional centers, innovative projects are difficult to design. LaVoy Exceptional Center, for example, supports students with a wide range of disabilities, yet Laura Johnson, the Media and Technology Specialist, used some out-of-the-box thinking to create a literacy project to improve the amount of time students are engaged in literacy learning regardless of their exceptionalities. Laura sincerely thanks HEF and Suncoast Credit Union for their generosity in funding LaVoy’s “For the Love of Reading” project.
