HCPS celebrates JROTC cadets during the Cadet of the Year ceremony
Hillsborough County Public School’s top Air Force, Army, Marine, and Navy JROTC cadets were recently celebrated during the Cadet of the Year ceremony held at Armwood High School on March 30, 2017. Cadet First Lieutenant (C/1LT) Taeghen McCarthy from Alsonso HS was honored as the Top Cadet of the Year.
Col. Samuel Taylor, JROTC DRT for HCPS welcomed guests to the 2017 Cadet of the Year ceremony. Guest speaker Colonel Cedric Carrington, Director, Department of Strategic Wargaming, U.S. Army War College, and a graduate of Hillsborough High School class of 1989, spoke simply and eloquently to the cadets about the importance of who they are, and most importantly, what amazing things they are capable of doing in the future. Each selected cadet was introduced by a special presenter from his or her school and then received a beautiful bronze eagle trophy. HCPS School Board Member Sally Harris and Superintendent Jeff Eakins congratulated and posed for photos with each of the cadets as they were honored.
The culmination of the event was the announcement by Superintendent Eakins of Cadet First Lieutenant Taeghen McCarthy from Alonso High School’s Army JROTC squadron as the 2017 Cadet of the Year. In addition to being presented with a very impressive bronze trophy, she was also the recipient of four other special awards from the Military Order of the World Wars, the Association of the United States Army, the Gold Star Awareness, Inc., and the Military Family Support Trust.
Congratulations to these cadets and their JROTC units for their outstanding commitment to school, family, and community. They certainly represent the very best of our students and they make us all proud!
