District officials prepare for hurricane readiness

April 27, 2017

Emergencies and disasters comes in all forms and timelines.  Having a baseline of preparedness already in place is critical to address any type of weather or natural disaster emergency event in order to ensure the safety of our students, their families, and other residents of Hillsborough County.  To that end, administrators and representatives from schools designated as either a Primary, High Intensity, Special Needs, or Primary-Public Safety/First Responder emergency shelter for Hillsborough County met recently with the HCPS Emergency Management team to review and address readiness, training, teamwork and the communication protocols that are crucial during a weather or natural disaster event.

The Hillsborough County Office of Emergency Management is responsible for planning and coordinating actions to prepare, respond, and recover from natural or man-made disasters in Hillsborough County. The Office manages the County Emergency Operations Center, conducts emergency training, and helps coordinate the Citizen Emergency Response Teams and Citizen’s Corps.  The link below to their website can provide residents with useful and informative information, including a shelter list, materials for preparation and it will even allow you to sign up for alerts that you can receive on your smartphone.  You can review this website at http://www.hillsboroughcounty.org/residents/public-safety/emergency-management.

Hillsborough County Public Schools engages and partners with the American Red Cross and the Hillsborough County Office of Emergency Management to provide emergency shelters.  Even though all HCPS school sites get rated and inspected for use as an emergency shelter, 62 sites have been identified and designated for this purpose specifically.  These designated sites accommodate a wide range of county residents (and sometimes those from out of the county), volunteers, and public safety personnel based on the severity of the emergency we are confronted with.  HCPS also has identified four shelters that will receive service animals during an Emergency Operations Center (EOC) activation.
