Why:

The Buddy Bench is a simple idea to eliminate loneliness and foster friendship on the playground. The Buddy Bench encourages caring, open-minded thinkers and friends.

The History of the Buddy Bench: In the spring of 2013, a 1st grader in Pennsylvania named Christian was faced with the possibility of moving to Germany with his family. When the family was looking at a website for a school overseas, Christian saw a picture of a special bench on the playground. He and his parents did some research and found out, this was a bench that students could sit on when they were in need of a friend. Christian thought it would be great to have this bench on the playground at his current school, Roundtown Elementary. He knew that there were some kids who felt lonely at recess and he thought this would put an end to that. He told his teacher and his principal about it and by the next school year, after Christian’s efforts, a Buddy Bench was placed on the playground at Roundtown Elementary. A local newspaper did a story on the buddy bench and it caught national attention.
Now students at Roland Park K-8 are excited to have a Buddy Bench on their own playground!
