Hillsborough Students Honored with National Art and Writing Awards

June 21, 2017

Ten students from Hillsborough County Public Schools earned NATIONAL Scholastic Art & Writing Awards for their creative endeavors this year.  Their works were selected as among the best of over 330,000 works submitted to Regional Affiliates during the 2016-17 school year.  Of those submitted, less than 1% earned recognition as American Vision, American Voices, Silver, or Gold Medalists. Hillsborough Region students earned 12 national awards – 11 of them went to students from HCPS (one was from a private school)!

In addition, just 700 students from around the country and their teachers were invited to Carnegie Hall to receive their American Vision, American Voices, and Gold Medals. Our Hillsborough Region had 3 students who were lucky enough to attend the awards on June 8, 2017 at Carnegie Hall in Manhattan. Thanks to the commitment of the Hillsborough Education Foundation (HEF) and the generous contribution from Suncoast Schools Credit Union (SSCU), all three students and all three teachers were able to travel to be part of these events.

Below are the award categories and the winners from the Hillsborough region. Students and educators of students who received Silver Medals will receive their medals and certificates at home because of limited space at Carnegie Hall and other event venues.  All of these students deserve recognition.  (The asterisk denotes the students and teachers who traveled to New York.)

Elizabeth Brown, Supervisor of Secondary Language Arts for HCPS, said, “My sincerest appreciation goes out to HEF for their commitment to the Hillsborough students and teachers who participated in this year's awards. We couldn't have done it without you or the generous support from our presenting sponsor, Suncoast Credit Union!  I hope these pictures will show what I know to be true; we have found a way to honor the arts and writing achievements for the students in Hillsborough County.”  Kudos to our amazingly talented writers and artists and their teachers and schools!
