Middle schools open doors to students & families
Some of the most important decisions parents make are about their child's education. There may be a specific program or initiative that you feel that your child will benefit from. You may want your child's school to reflect the values of your family and community. Simply put, you want to choose a school that is a good fit for your child. In an effort to help families with this decision, several schools in Hillsborough County are making a concerted effort in educating and showcasing what their schools have to offer - complete with informational sessions, campus tours, and hands-on experiences for families and students.
Recently, more than 160 fifth graders eagerly unloaded buses from Kimbell and Lewis Elementary Schools to get a taste of Greco Middle School. The “Taste of Greco” event was created to give students an up-close and personal tour of the campus, classrooms and special areas including the vegetable garden, a new Makerspace, the newly painted Fuel Up to Play 60 mural and the school’s farm – complete with chickens, a goat and a donkey. Students experienced live classes and caught moments of learning and student collaboration happening inside the classrooms. Parents and family members were invited back that evening for an informational session with Greco administration and staff.
“Pep rallies, lockers, electives, learning and loads of fun!” That’s how one excited fifth grader from Chiles Elementary described Liberty Middle School’s 5th grade field trip and open house. On Thursday, October 27, over 600 fifth graders visited the campus to experience middle school life at Liberty. Current Liberty student leaders named “Eagle Ambassadors” led group tours and gave presentations on some of the programs and offerings at Liberty. A hands-on practice session and introduction to lockers was a popular stop. Liberty’s Coach Villeneuve explained how lockers are used in middle school, and with more than enough locks hanging from volleyball nets, each fifth grader had an opportunity to try it out for themselves. A lively performance by the jazz band and Show Choir showcased the school’s strong performing arts program. The agriculture stop was a favorite as Agriculture students showed off the animals they care for and the lush landscaping project they recently completed. Eagle Ambassadors answered questions from the fifth-grade audience about their experience as middle schoolers. “You would really love it here. I personally love all the different clubs you can be a part of and everyone is super nice and helpful,” shared sixth grade Eagle Ambassador, Jesika Brigner.
Parents were invited to the campus on Thursday, November 2 to see and experience the activities their students participated in. Liberty’s staff, PTA and students were on-hand to interact and answer any questions parents had on their minds.
On the day before Halloween, Rampello K-8 Downtown Partnership School cleverly hosted the “Don’t Be Afraid of Middle School” event on their campus. Rising sixth graders from schools all over the district had the opportunity to shadow a current Rampello sixth grade student leader as they attended their second and third period classes. “My favorite part from today was going into a Science class with my buddy. They were talking about erosion and using Play-Doh to demonstrate,” shared Jasmine from Ballast Point Elementary. Visiting fifth graders enjoyed a pizza lunch with their new friends while having an interactive Q&A session with Rampello’s administrative staff, teachers, student leaders and Officer Steve (Rampello’s School Resource Officer).
“We can talk to parents and students about our school all day, but you can’t beat having the opportunity to walk the halls, interact with others, and really see our strong culture and supportive environment in action. This is a special place to learn,” said Amy Miller, Lead Teacher at Rampello.
