A Geography Enthusiast at Mulrennan is one Step Closer to a $50,000 College Scholarship

January 24, 2018

Last week, eighth-grader Joshua Mangalam from Mulrennan Middle School won the school competition of the National Geographic Bee and is one step closer to a chance at $50,000 college scholarship. The school geography bee, at which 25 students answered questions on geography, was the first round in the 30th annual National Geographic Bee, a geography competition designed to inspire and reward students’ curiosity about the world.

Frank Buehler, seventh-grade civics teacher moderated and judged the competition, he has been involved in the competitions the last 20 years in Hillsborough County Public Schoosl (HCPS). "I have been doing this for over twenty years in the district and these are some smart kids, I tribute that to our community, parents and the students themselves," said Buehler.

Thousands of schools around the United States and in the five U.S. territories are participation in the 2018 National Geographic Bee. The school champions, including Joshua, will take a qualifying test; up to 100 of the top scorers on that test will then be eligible to compete in the state Bee on April 6, 2018 in Jacksonville, Florida.

Over the years, Mulrennan has sent 11 students to the state Bee, with several of those students placing in the top 10 for the state.

“Geography is my favorite subject. To prepare for the competition I take the National Geographic Quiz and anything I get wrong I look it up and learn from that,” said school champion Joshua Mangalam

The National Geographic Society will provide an all-expense paid trip to Washington D.C., for state winners to participate in the Bee national championship rounds May 20-23, 2018. The first place national champion will receive a $50,000 college scholarship, a lifetime membership in the Society, including a subscription to National Geographic magazine, and an all-expense-paid Lindblad expedition to the Galapagos Islands aboard the new National Geographic Endeavor II. Second and third place finishers will receive $25,000 and $10,000 college scholarships.

Best of luck to Joshua and all students who have participated and made it this far!
