Students Team Up for Reading to Celebrate Literacy Week
January 26, 2018
To celebrate literacy week in Florida, Bailey Elementary held a "Team Up for Reading Day" and partnered with Strawberry Crest High School. Over 60 high school athletes from Strawberry Crest partnered up to read a sports related book or article with the Bailey scholars. The athletes then led the class in a reading comprehension wrap-up activity.
Laney Mastrovito is taking college credits and also plays on the girls varsity basketball team at Strawberry Crest. She spoke to students about the importance of budgeting time to keep grades up in order to continue playing the sports you love.
In several classes, K-W-L charts were used to track what the students knows (K), wants to know (W), and has learned (L) about the article based on a professional football player.
The Bailey Bulls also enjoyed asking the Chargers about their high school experiences, learned more about the sport each Charger plays and shared their own athletic abilities and aspirations with their new-found role models.
"The connection we were hoping to make is that reading is important in all aspects of your life, not just when you are in the classroom during school, but it's also important for things like sports," said Elizabeth Vasaturo, reading coach at Bailey Elementary.
