Ippolito Wraps Up Black History Month with Motown Celebration
Students and staff at Ippolito Elementary treated parents and classmates to a Motown Tribute to wrap up Black History Month.
“It’s to celebrate Black History Month, because it is important,” said Ippolito Elementary School Principal Nicole Bennett. “We picked an important part in time, which was Motown. So, everyone who was seen represented Motown in some way, shape or form. There were important artists during that time in Motown that truly had an impact on the music of today that students don’t even know.”
Students performed to songs like, “Car Wash” by Rose Royce, “My Girl” by the Temptations, and “You Can’t Hurry Love” by the Supremes.
“I want people to know that it’s better than new school, because it tells stories,” said fifth grader, Nevaeh. “I just feel like they can take what they learned today, like the kids, and put it into today.”
“I learned: treat people the way you want to be treated,” said Johnny, a fifth-grader.
“All month long, we’ve really been working on just important African Americans in history – past and present. We have to own it, note it, and showcase it,” Bennett said.
As part of Black History Month, students also participated in a “Wax Museum” and dressed up as important people from the past who made an impact on the world today, such as Garret Morgan – the inventor of the three-light traffic signal, Harriet Tubman – the most famous “conductor” of the Underground Railroad, and poet Gwendolyn Brooks.
“The whole point is to learn – to learn about the past, so we can move forward in the future,” Bennett said.
