The Annual Gaither Stampede welcomed Special Olympic Athletes and a Parade of Superheroes, Rough Riders and More!

March 10, 2018

Gaither High School hosted the 22nd Annual Gaither Stampede, a Special Olympics Training Day on Feb. 23.

The 307 participating athletes represented the following schools: Buchanan, Caminiti, Claywell, Coleman, Freedom, Jefferson, King, Leto, Plant, Sickles, Steinbrenner, Turner Bartels K-8, Walker, Wharton and Gaither

Athletes were paired with a Gaither student as their buddy for the day. The day began with an opening ceremony which included the United States Special Operations Command parachuting into Gaither stadium, followed by a parade of community volunteers, mascots, super heroes, Star Wars characters and athletes representing each participating school.

Each of the athletes competed in 2 of the 18 different track and field events offered. The events were run by teachers, members of Gaither athletic teams, and volunteers from the Tampa Parks and Recreation Department. When not competing, the athletes and their buddy could visit the Olympic Village where they found a variety of games and activities organized by students from Gaither clubs.  Each athlete received a gold medal, photo with their medal, teddy bear from the Rough Riders, and a t-shirt designed by a Gaither art student. The Knights of Columbus served lunch to all the athletes, volunteers and families who attended.

This event is a gift to Special Olympians from the Gaither High School faculty, staff and students.
