Tampa, Fla. – (October 28, 2015) – It will be an emotional night as Hillsborough County Public Schools teams up with NOPE (Narcotics Overdose Prevention & Education) of Hillsborough, the Tampa Police Department, and the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office for a candlelight vigil honoring the memory of those who have lost their lives due to drug-related causes.
Students and parents are expected to attend the ceremony on Thursday, October 29, at 7:00 p.m., at Hillsborough High School. The event will start in the auditorium with former Tampa Police Chief Jane Castor as the keynote speaker. A mother who lost her child to drug use will also share her family’s story. Participants will then go out to the school’s front lawn for the candlelight vigil. Hillsborough High School is located at 5000 N. Central Avenue, Tampa.
A memorial wall with more than 500 photos will be on display, showing young people who have lost their lives as a result of drug or alcohol abuse. Starting at 6 p.m., before the ceremony begins, the community is invited to view the memorial wall and add their story and a photo to the wall. Music will be performed by Steinbrenner High School’s Show Choir Entourage and Officer Mark Holloway.
The goal of NOPE is to reach the community through prevention and education. NOPE offers presentations to HCPS middle and high school students throughout the year.
