2410 - Special Services

Health Services

The Board shall cooperate with the county health unit in providing professional medical supervision in all school health matters as required by the School Health Services Act F.S. 381.0056. The District and the Hillsborough County Health Department shall jointly develop a school health services plan approved by the Board and the Department of Children and Families Services. The Student Services Procedures Manual and the Student/Parent Elementary and Secondary Handbook should be referenced.

The Superintendent shall develop a joint plan with the Hillsborough County Health Department and the Department of Children and Families Services and submit it to the Board for approval. The plan is to include but not necessarily be limited to:

  A. The periodic review of student health records for compliance with State statutes

 

  B. Health in-service to schools and resource persons for individual group-related health issues

 

  C. School entry health examinations

 

  D. Compulsory immunization for school entry

 

  E. Exemptions from physical examination and/or immunizations

 

  F. Emergency flip charts for various health procedures

 

  G. Emergency health care procedures and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) poster

 

  H. The administration of medication to students

 

  I. Parent request for the administration of medication to students

 

  J. The care of asthmatic students

 

  K. The control of head lice (pediculosis capitis)

 

  L. Emergency injections for insect stings

 

  M. Notification of a student's chronic health condition

 

  N. Vision and hearing screening

 

  O. Students and employees with HIV or AIDS

 

  P. Confidentiality of students or employees infected with AIDS

 

  Q. Contaminated materials protection and disposal

 

Mental Health Services

Mental health counseling services, case management services, and human and social services may be provided to students at a school site under mutual agreements with community-based public or private agencies. Each service provided shall be on a case-by-case basis with prior written approval of the student's parent or legal guardian.

The Superintendent shall develop and update as needed administrative procedures to implement this policy.
