The School Board of Hillsborough County, Florida, met in regular session Tuesday, October 16, 2018, at 3 p.m., in the School Board Auditorium, 901 East Kennedy Boulevard, Tampa, with Superintendent Jeff Eakins, and Board Members Lynn Gray, April Griffin, Sally Harris, Tamara Shamburger, Melissa Snively, Cindy Stuart, and Susan Valdes present.  Chair Sally Harris presided.

Call to Order:  Meeting called to order at 3:03 p.m.

Moment of Silence and Pledge of Allegiance:  Moment of silence followed by Vice Chair Shamburger leading in the Pledge of Allegiance. 

Acknowledged Entertainment:

Vice Chair Shamburger acknowledged the Mitchell Elementary School Strings Ensemble students who provided entertainment prior to the School Board meeting.  Each student introduced themselves.

Recognitions and Proclamations (Section A)

Chair Harris recognized Susan Valdes for her time served as a HCPS School Board member and read the following resolution into the record.

WHEREAS, Mrs. Susan L. Valdes has served three-and-a-half terms as a member of the School Board of Hillsborough County, Florida, and

WHEREAS, Mrs. Valdes served two terms as Chair of the School Board, in 2010–2011 and 2014–2015, shaping policy for our public schools with a strong understanding of the varied and often challenging experiences students face in their daily lives, and

WHEREAS, Mrs. Valdes’ dedication to the students of Hillsborough County during her fourteen years of service has helped launch new programs including Dual Language Academies, expanded the reach of the Office of Supplier Diversity, and shaped countless other projects that impact our community’s children, and

WHEREAS, Mrs. Valdes’ commitment to creating a Racial Equity Policy was honored with the nationwide RISE Award and will have a lasting effect on our region by ensuring all students—who Ms. Valdes considers "her babies”—will have the supports they need to succeed, and

WHEREAS, Mrs. Valdes’ restless pursuit of Preparing Students for Life increased the number of students achieving the life-changing accomplishment of high school graduation by advocating for new district supports that reduced the number of Certificates of Completion and narrowed achievement gaps, and

WHEREAS, Mrs. Valdes worked vigorously to ensure fair and equal opportunities are afforded to small and diverse businesses to compete for procurement bids and public contracts through the efforts of the Office of Supplier Diversity, and

WHEREAS, students, district employees, and our community honor Mrs. Valdes for her deep and abiding concern for the educational needs of students,

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the School Board of Hillsborough County, Florida, deems it fitting and proper to publicly recognize the distinguished contributions of

SUSAN L. VALDES

and to express its great appreciation to Mrs. Susan L. Valdes for her efforts and work as a member of the School Board of Hillsborough County from 2004–2018.

WHEREAS, Mrs. Griffin served two terms as Chair of the School Board, in 2013–2014 and 2015–2016, bringing her professional passion for leadership and organizational management to the forefront, and

WHEREAS, Mrs. Griffin’s dedication to the students of Hillsborough County during her twelve years of service has opened new doors and created life-changing opportunities for children and young adults, and

WHEREAS, Mrs. Griffin’s outside-the-box thinking led to creative ways to protect our community’s most vulnerable students through new oversight, programs, and relationships with the Public Defender’s Office, and
