The School Board of Hillsborough County, Florida, met in special session Thursday, November 15, 2018, at

4 p.m., in the School Board Auditorium, 901 East Kennedy Boulevard, Tampa, with Superintendent Jeff Eakins, and Board Members Lynn Gray, Sally Harris, Tamara Shamburger, Melissa Snively, and Cindy Stuart present.  Chair Sally Harris presided.

Approximately 85 people were in the audience, including other school district personnel.

Call to Order:  Meeting called to order at 4:03 p.m.

Moment of Silence and Pledge of Allegiance:  Moment of silence followed by Vice Chair Shamburger leading in the Pledge of Allegiance. 

Adoption of the Agenda:

Motion by Mrs. Stuart, second by Vice Chair Shamburger, to adopt the agenda.  Motion unanimously carried.

Board – Roll Call:  Chair Harris declared a quorum with five Board Members present.  Mrs. Griffin absent

Approval of Minutes:

Motion by Mrs. Stuart, second by Vice Chair Shamburger, to approve the following minutes:

October 16, 2018 – School Board Meeting

October 22, 2018 – School Board Workshop

Motion unanimously carried.

The Hillsborough County School Board will Consider Names for Lee Elementary School

Superintendent Eakins highlighted the item.  Harrison Peters – Chief of Schools, explained the process of the renaming of the school.

Motion by Vice Chair Shamburger, second by Mrs. Stuart, to Rename Lee Elementary Magnet School to Tampa Heights Elementary Magnet School.  Motion carried with Mrs. Gray and Mrs. Snively opposed.

Discussion:

  • Robert E. Lee has no historic significance regarding the school
  • Robert E. Lee does not represent the community
  • School’s demographics have changed
  • Diversity in Tampa Heights
  • Tampa Heights is a community not a neighborhood
  • Supports naming of Tampa Heights Elementary School
  • Process of renaming school began 1 ½ years ago
  • Design teams are awaiting name change
  • Would like school community input
  • Have we engaged the public?
  • Started process of renaming for 1 ½ years
  • Student will have input in creating mascot, colors, etc. with new school name
  • Several names have been submitted for the renaming
  • Was a Town Hall meeting scheduled previously? No, we have not had town hall meetings in prior renaming of schools
  • Policy has been followed regarding the renaming of the school
  • Neighborhood meetings have occurred
  • Process was delayed until district received confirmation to rebuild
  • Desires more feedback from community
  • Request to vote by ballot
