HCPS publishes minutes of School Board meetings after Board approval. Although the online minutes do not include signatures, citizens may arrange to review the official documents by completing a public records request with the Communications Department.

The School Board of Hillsborough County, Florida, met in Workshop Session Wednesday, January 30, 2019, at 12:30 p.m., in the Principal’s Conference Room at Tampa Bay Technical High School, 6410 Orient Road, Tampa, with Superintendent Jeff Eakins, and Board Members Steve Cona, Lynn L. Gray, Stacy Hahn, Karen Perez, Tamara P. Shamburger, Melissa Snively, and Cindy Stuart present.  Chair Tamara Shamburger presided.

Approximately 15 people were in the audience, including other school district personnel.

Chair Shamburger called the meeting to order at 12:37 a.m.

The venue for this meeting changed due to the Governor’s Press Conference being held at Tampa Bay Technical High School.

(1)   School Board Legislative Workshop

This workshop was held to provide School Board Members an opportunity to discuss local and federal platforms, legislative session packet, and meetings with legislators and strategic planning.

Connie Milito, Chief Government Relations Officer, welcomed everyone and gave a brief update on what is happening in Tallahassee.

Dr. Jason Pepe, Legislative Services Manager, outline the three strategic objectives.

  • Local Leaders and Partners
    • Importance of community partnerships
  • Divisional Leaders
    • Importance of collaborative effort to analyze the impact and implementation of legislation on Hillsborough County Public Schools (HCPS) policies and procedures
  • Relationships, Education, Influence
    • Promoting state and federal legislation that supports public school programs and services

Kristin Davis, Department Manager, Policy and Research

  • Comprehensive Educational Guide providing information that directly and indirectly impacts Legislative Platform, was provided to each School Board Member.

General Discussion included:

  • Board Members on the same page
  • Board Members are engaged in the legislative process
  • Speak to Legislators about needs specific to our county
  • Speak as a Board present a unified front
  • Our delegation is part of our team
  • Work must always put student’s first
  • Have one or two items you are extremely clear about what you want to discuss with Legislator
    • Mechanics of the meeting
    • Personal story
    • Remember how legislation effects our district in a positive way
    • Do your homework
    • Understand your connection with legislator and their backgrounds
  • Prioritize workforce education
  • Base student allocation
  • Safety dollars should not be stopped at the state level.
  • Alternative pathways
  • Capital restoration would like to see .5 milege given back to our district.
  • Revise the way property appraisers appraise new and currently owned property.
  • Member Snively will compile a schedule of Tallahassee meetings, please send all requested dates to her by Friday February 1, 2019.
  • If Board Member choses to go to Tallahassee during a week that is not assigned, the district will not reimburse any expenses.
  • Calendar of organizations Classroom Teachers Association, Hillsborough Association School Administrators, etc. attending session will be distributed to Board Members
  • Florida School Board Association week (April 3-5, 2019) all Board Members are expected to be in Tallahassee
