The School Board of Hillsborough County, Florida, met in regular session Tuesday, February 19, 2019, at 3:30 p.m., in the School Board Auditorium, 901 East Kennedy Boulevard, Tampa, with Superintendent Jeff Eakins, and Board Members Steve Cona, Lynn Gray, Stacy Hahn, Karen Perez, Tamara Shamburger, Melissa Snively and Cindy Stuart present.  Chair Tamara Shamburger presided.

Moment of Silence and Pledge of Allegiance:  Moment of silence followed by Vice Chair Snively leading in the Pledge of Allegiance. 

Acknowledged Entertainment:

Vice Chair Snively acknowledged the West Tampa Elementary School Handbell Ensemble.  Each student introduced themselves and was accompanied by Louis Murphy – Principal and Ashley Gillespie – Music teacher.

Student Representative:  Chair Shamburger introduced Emily Kemp, Robinson High School student, Citizen Advisory Committee (CAC) member who served as the Student School Board Representative

Lynn Dougherty-Underwood – Director, Literacy K-12, highlighted the item and read the proclamation.

Recognition of the 2019 "Excellence in Education" Winners and Finalists (Chief of Schools)

Mike McCollum – Chief Advancement Officer, Hillsborough Education Foundation and AnnMarie Courtney – Supervisor, Community Engagement and Philanthropy highlighted the item and introduced the following winners and finalists.

  • Ida S. Baker Diversity Educator of the Year – Sandra Misciasci
  • Instructional Support Employee of the Year – Barbara Maxwell
  • Teacher of the Year – Dakeyan C. Graham

The finalists were:

Adoption of Resolution Opposing Arming Teachers in the School District of Hillsborough County, Florida; Opposing Senate Bill 7030 (Deputy Superintendent, Instruction) Revised attachment

Mrs. Gray highlighted the item and read the proclamation.

Motion by Mrs. Gray, second by Mrs. Stuart, to Adopt the Resolution Opposing Arming Teachers in the School District of Hillsborough County, Florida; Opposing Senate Bill 7030.  Friendly Amendment made by Mrs. Snively to strike all reference in the Resolution A 03R to specific bills.  Motion unanimously carried.
