The School Board of Hillsborough County, Florida, met for recognitions Tuesday, March 8, 2016, at 5:30 p.m., in the School Board Auditorium, 901 East Kennedy Boulevard, Tampa, with Superintendent Jeff Eakins, and Board Members Doretha W. Edgecomb, April Griffin, Sally Harris, Carol Kurdell, and Susan Valdes present.  Chair April Griffin presided.

Approximately 175 people were in the audience, including other school district personnel.

Call to Order:  Meeting called to order at 5:30 p.m.

Moment of Silence and Pledge of Allegiance:  Moment of silence followed by S. Valdes leading in the Pledge of Allegiance to the United States Flag. 

Board – Roll Call:  Chair A. Griffin declared quorum with five Board Members present.  Melissa Snively and Cindy Stuart were absent.



Recognition of Mrs. Bertha Saladino for 35 Years of Community Service

Russell Wallace, Principal of Bailey Elementary School, highlighted the recognition.  Mrs. Saladino was married to Tony Saladino, former P.E. Coach for Hillsborough County Public Schools for 52 years.  Mr. Wallace described the lifetime accomplishments of the first lady of baseball.  

Tony Saladino, Jr. and Betty Nunez, daughter were in attendance.


Recognition of the 2015/2016 78th Street Community Library Essay Contest Winners (Curriculum and Instruction Division)

Temetia Creed, Supervisor of Elementary Language Arts/Writing, highlighted the recognition and introduced the following winners.  Each student winner received a laptop computer from Rent King. Student winners were presented with a certificate for their outstanding accomplishment.

Yulian Bell, Palm River Elementary School

Third Place:

Anthony Simon, Clair Mel Elementary School


Parent, teachers, and staff in attendance were recognized for their support.



Recognition of the 2015/2016 Middle School District Champions for Track and the Florida High School Athletics Association (FHSAA) State Champions for Swimming, Cheerleading, and Wrestling (Student Services Division)

Lanness Robinson, Director of Athletics, and Jennifer Burchill, Assistant Director of Athletics, highlighted the recognition and introduced the coaches of each team.  Coaches made brief comments and introduced students.  Each student winner was presented with a certificate.

The Hillsborough Education Foundation will Recognize Partner for Support of Public Education (Hillsborough Education Foundation)

Phil Jones, Hillsborough Education Foundation President, highlighted the recognition.  Mr. Jones introduced Mr. Dave Kemper, Senior Principal, and Kim Austin, Regional Vice President, representing Stantec and presented them with a plaque for their support of public education and their partnership.
