Protecting HCPS Students and Personnel
Dear Parents and Guardians,
The safety of your children and our employees is a top priority in Hillsborough County. As many of you are aware, new state laws require an armed, trained, first responder on every school campus during the school day beginning in the 2018-2019 school year.
Today, Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister and Hillsborough County Public Schools Superintendent Jeff Eakins announced the school security plan for our schools.
In middle and high schools: you will continue to see a school resource deputy or officer from the sheriff’s office or Tampa Police Department. Starting new this fall, there will be an armed school security officer at every elementary school.
Hillsborough County Public Schools has had school security officers in our schools for 49 years. We are expanding that security team, to place one officer at every elementary school. These officers already receive law enforcement level training, including active shooter response, crisis intervention and defensive tactics. Two-thirds of our district’s current security officers are current or former law enforcement officers and one-third are current or former military servicemembers.
You can learn more about some of our school security officers by watching the 3-minute video on this page.
Every student has a right to learn in a safe place. Thank you for putting your trust in us, to provide that safe learning environment – as we continue to prepare students for life.
The mission of Security Services is to reinforce the Strategic Plan of Hillsborough County Public Schools (HCPS) by promoting a culture of safety and respect that is free from harassment, bullying and aggression while demonstrating best practice in all areas of safety.
We are a full-service Security Department that recognizes the importance of being an advocate for students, staff and personnel on our campuses.
We provide around-the-clock professional security services with our own HCPS Security personnel as well as the staffing of sworn law enforcement officers on our middle and high school campuses. This partnership of HCPS Security Services and our local law enforcement agencies allows us to provide and maintain a safe and secure learning environment for our students, staff and visitors. Security Services works collaboratively with external law enforcement agencies: Tampa Police Department, Temple Terrace Police Department, Plant City Police Department and Hillsborough County Sherriff’s Office to ensure ethical management and investigation of issues that arise on HCPS property.
The School Security Department services the 8th largest school district in the nation. We monitor and respond to a variety of situations and events. Our duties and responsibilities range from alarm call response to any of our nearly 280 sites, to providing comprehensive presentations about school safety, pedestrian safety, bullying and drug/gang prevention. As part of securing and maintaining our campuses, we routinely utilize the expertise of our certified officers in Crime Prevention through Environmental Design.
