New leadership club makes a splash at Pierce Middle School

Students at Pierce Middle School are rushing to join a new organization inspired by college fraternities and sororities and aimed at building a multi-year family of students that stretches to high school and beyond. More than 40 Archers comprise the charter class of the Alpha Phi Mu, a leadership club sponsored by science teacher Adisleydi Alonso.

Regular after-school activities have replaced watching TV, playing on phones and other activities. Instead, students are learning life skills, building self-esteem and creating community at the west Hillsborough County school.

Three teachers win $10,000 prizes for excellence in math/science education

Three Hillsborough County Public Schools high school teachers recently won $10,000 each for sharing their energy and enthusiasm for science or mathematics through creative and innovative methods. Tiffany Oliver of Robinson, Julie Sackles of Tampa Bay Tech and Sue Traynham of Sickles were recognized by the Clearwater foundation.

Educators and supporters gathered Wednesday, Oct. 18 at Middleton High School to celebrate recognition for Hillsborough County Public Schools’ commitment to teaching African-American history. The celebration marked the culmination of the three-year process to earn Exemplary Status for the Teaching of African-American History from the Florida Department of Education.

District journalism students sweep local competition

On a day of learning, networking and competition, Hillsborough County Public Schools media students swept the top awards at last week’s Florida Scholastic Press Association District 4 workshop, a gathering of about 700 students from the seven-county Tampa Bay area. First place in all eight on-the-spot journalism/media contests went to HCPS students.

Schools Celebrate Good News about Grades

It was a celebration at many schools across Hillsborough County as the 2016-2017 school grades were released by the state. At Dunbar Elementary Magnet, Superintendent Jeff Eakins, along with School Board Chair Cindy Stuart, Vice Chair Sally Harris and other district leaders brought flowers and balloons for Principal Frankye Bulmer, Miles Elementary Principal Greg Cannella and Shaw Elementary Principal Rachel Walters.

School District Celebrates Increasing Graduation Rates

The district recently hosted a Joint Principals and Supervisors meeting held at Robinson High School. The auditorium was filled with students, principals, union representatives, and community partners as they shared their positive messages with Superintendent Eakins, amidst cheers, confetti, and music in celebration of the rise in graduation rates in HCPS.
