Hispanic & Multicultural Outreach Initiatives and Projects

PARENT SCHOOL PARTNERSHIP PROGRAM

The PSP Program, A National MALDEF Program, will increase parent engagement in schools within the Hispanic & Multicultural community. The PSP Program seeks to empower parents to be advocates in their school with leadership training. Parents will understand their rights and responsibilities, how to navigate the school system, and develop leadership skills to advocate on all levels for their child’s education. Schools have trained facilitators at 20 schools with high Hispanic student enrollment and the program expanded to Achievement Schools.

CUENTA CONMIGO INITITIATIVE

A showcase of Hillsborough County Public Schools district programs elevating achievement and changing lives for Hispanic & Multicultural students and families. Our district has unique and impactful programs that are shaping how we engage our community and ensure student success. Held quarterly at the Children’s Board, community members at large may come to learn about these wonderful initiatives and commit continued support to ensure their success.

ECHALE GANAS: GIVE IT ALL YOU GOT!

In Partnership with the South shore Campaign for Human Trafficking, The Echale Ganas Project created at Shields Middle School helps immigrant youth tap into their cultural capital and self-assets to help propel their academic success through creative therapeutic projects and mentoring. Students meet on a monthly basis to engage in art and music therapy that intertwines college and career readiness activities.

DALE

DALE (D.evelopment A.cceleration for L.atinos’ E.ducation) is an initiative designed in partnership with the Mayor’s Hispanic Advisory Council to increase the number of historically underrepresented Latinos in high paying industries including Business, Finance, STEM, Education & Health Services by affording Latinx students access to career exploration, professional career mentoring and career shadowing opportunities to highlight diversity in the workplace. Corporate partners include Bank of Tampa, Nielsen, Helios Foundation, Tampa Bay History Center, Joffrey’s and Citibank.

DREAMER SUMMIT

In partnership with a coalition of dreamer advocate organizations, the Dreamer Summit initiated to provide the dreamer youth community a support network that educates and to prepare schools to provide resources to better support dreamers in academic success and postsecondary access.

BIENVENIDOS INITIATIVE

The Bienvenidos Initiative responded to the influx of students and families affected by Hurricane Maria. The Initiative aimed at aligning community and district resources to be accessible to new students and families arriving. The event provided supplies to help stabilize educational experience and connected to community organizations and district departments that were critical in their transitional process. Additionally, it actively engaged school leaders in understanding the importance of school culture and welcoming best practices.

TAMPA HISPANIC BAR ASSOCIATION DAY AT THE COURTHOUSE

In partnership with the Tampa Hispanic Bar Association, A day At the Courthouse is a career and professional exploration opportunity for Latinx youth interested in the legal profession. Committed to the advancement of Latinos in the profession, THBA intends to give students access to Latinx judges, attorneys, and clerks as role models in order to increasing the number of Latinos in law.

KPI: Community Engagement

HISPANIC & MULTICULTURAL OUTREACH INTERNAL TASKFORCE

A taskforce comprised of district and school leaders to challenge and change internal processes that are barriers to meaningful student, family and community engagement including but not limited to: Communication, Enrollment Processes, Teacher-Parent Relationships & College and Career Readiness.

HOTLINE

A bilingual hotline to inform the Spanish –speaking community of district programs and processes available monthly on pertinent educational topics important to the Latinx community. Volunteer driven, various district staff and school leaders to clarify any pending issues.

ADVOCACY & CAPACITY TRAININGS

School leader trainings to inform and build capacity around issues that affect the Latinx community such as Transition and Crisis, Trauma and Resilience, Cultural Capital, Education Law specifically applicable to immigrant communities, Hispanidad, School safety and other relevant community issues. These capacity-training opportunities strengthen school- community relationships and improve school culture and belonging for underrepresented groups.
