Students from Knights Elementary collected items for the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) to add to their stock of supplies for the homeless shelters in our area. The name of the project was Helping the Homeless, and this drive was put together and held by Knights Elementary's National Elementary Honor Society (NEHS).
The students in NEHS pick one donation drive each year, and this year they voted on helping the homeless. Through the recommendation of a Knights teacher, students discovered that the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office collected items. The students felt this was the way they wanted to reach the homeless community. Students worked to create a list of needed items, then sent out flyers asking for the entire school to donate. Students then sorted and bagged the items.
In all, with the generosity of the community, students collected enough to fill approximately 40 bags. On May 16, Deputy Joshua Boyer came to talk to the students and picked up the items.
"This project was completely student driven. I just facilitated. I want students to take ownership of their potential for impact in the community. They can absolutely make a difference in this world if they set out with a goal and work hard to achieve it,” said NEHS sponsor Ashley Patamasank.View Full Album
