The Achievement Schools initiative is a systematic way to help our schools with the highest needs. The work that our schools have been doing has provided a solid foundation for the future. We now need the system to rally around that to ensure that we are not the barrier to academic success. Our students’ futures depend on it, so when people ask me “Why now?” my answer is “Why NOT now? We do not have one minute to waste.”
All of our students deserve a quality education, and we believe we can achieve this if as a system we shift our thinking and practices to better focus on equity. This means prioritizing schools that have traditionally struggled with academic performance, prioritizing the resources, time and supports for them so they get exactly what they need, when they need it.
Not every school is in the same place for what they need – so what this model will look like is a menu of options that will differ depending on the immediate needs of the teachers and leaders.
A large component of Achievement Schools’ success is community support. For anyone wondering how they can help, my advice is to be active and engaged with a school by volunteering or mentoring. When our schools are supported by the community, we all succeed.
My wish is that the entire district, including our parents and community members, continues to champion this effort. If we do the right things and provide the right supports for our leaders and teachers, our students are going to be the ultimate winners.
