Winn-Dixie and Scholastic recently donated 6,000 new books to our district during a presentation held at Lomax Elementary Magnet School. The kindergarten students in attendance couldn't have been more excited. After Assistant Principal Stacie Lonsway greeted the crowd, Area Superintendent Owen Young also said hello, and then student representative Jelani Robinson welcomed the guests with a poised and confident address. Joey Medina, Regional Vice President for Winn-Dixie, was introduced as the guest of honor. Then, the fun began!
In an enthusiastic and hilarious read aloud of the kindergarten favorite, "There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly," Mr. Medina and the Supervisor for Magnet Programs, Robert Cox, enthralled the audience young and old with their dramatic and entertaining antics – including individual students recalling details from the story while filling the "old lady" puppet with all of the things that were "swallowed" during the reading.
As students were dismissed, they were given a drink, a snack and a copy of the book to take home with them. Medina, Cox, Board Chair Sally Harris, Board Members Lynn Gray and Tamara Shamburger and other district staff loaded up a Winn-Dixie grocery cart with piles of additional copies of the books, along with more snacks and drinks, and delivered them personally to the other kindergarten classrooms. The students and their teachers were surprised and appreciative, and showed their gratitude with sweet smiles, hugs, and thank you's!
The love of literacy and the fun of reading were themes throughout the Media Center, hallways, and kindergarten classrooms at Lomax Magnet Elementary School. The additional books will help supplement media centers across our district, so other children can enjoy them.
Winn-Dixie donated the books as part of its in-store promotion with Kellogg’s, which is a result of Winn-Dixie customers purchasing participating Kellogg’s products to earn credits in redemption for a book to keep or donate.
