Krystal Lofton is the principal at Folsom Elementary School.
I feel that I can be the voice for the voiceless – the advocate for my students who wouldn’t necessarily have that support in another arena.
I love working at an Achievement School because I have a passion for the work, and I look at all the kids as my own children. I look at our teachers and think, I would want to be in their class if I were a student.
Students love Folsom Elementary because of the relationships they have with their teachers, principals, coaches and staff.
We really look at the whole child here. Many of our children are coming into school with social- emotional needs and some type of trauma they’ve experienced. We can’t get to the academic need until we address this emotional trauma and help them through it.
This work takes a team. I look to see if staff has G.R.I.T. – Growth, Resilience, Initiative and Tenacity. We have to know we are growing from each other, and I believe that is what makes a strong school successful within turnarounds, because you can’t do this work by yourself.
In our Data Den, we have all of our student data posted, and our teachers create mini-assessments based on the standards. We’ve created and designed a plan that is specific for children to be successful – and that is what makes a difference. We have to give children a quality education and in order to achieve that, we have to put the proper structures in place for our kids.
Any little bit of growth is exciting for me. Growth is progress and that is success. We celebrate and we care about them, and we remind them that they can be successful in everything that they do.
