Why #WeAchieveTogether: Teacher Shannon Schoenrock

February 20, 2019 - Employee Excellence

Shannon Schoenrock is a fifth grade English Language Arts teacher at Kenly Elementary School.

It’s kind of homey in my classroom and that’s my goal, especially as a reading teacher. Students lay around everywhere and make themselves comfortable. They feel like they’re entering their home.

I’ve been at Kenly 22 years. I love the kids. I love the community around here. I couldn’t imagine being anywhere else.

They need me, and I know this is my calling. It’s what I’ve always wanted to do and what I feel like I need to do.

We’re a family in here. We respect each other. It’s a safe zone. I wouldn’t want to work for anybody that I know didn’t respect me and love me – and they feel that and know that, because I tell them that and I show them that. It’s returned, and it turns into this amazing atmosphere in the room, too. They respect each other.

We have to build that relationship. I talk with them. I eat lunch with them every day. We have that relationship, but they also know when it’s time to do their work.

At any school you have to love the kids, but even more so here. You have to have a real passion for it. An understanding of what they’re going through outside of here is extremely important, because you can’t do your job if you don’t understand that. They need you. They need your love and understanding to begin with – and then you can work on the academics. If you don’t have that relationship first, you don’t have anything.

I’m building that community on Twitter, as well. It’s important for others to see what students are doing, for other teachers to see they are successful here, that they do well, and they produce. I just love my kids and love showing them off!

Reading is my passion, and I try to instill that in them. When they come back and talk about the books that they read and are still reading, that I’m growing these lifelong readers, that’s my hope for them and my passion. Still – 22 years later, I love what I do.
