Riverview High Student wins multiple weightlifting medals at Special Olympics competitions

It is not easy to reach your dreams. It takes hard work, determination and sacrifice.

That is something Riverview High School student Ben Greer definitely understands.

Ben has Down Syndrome and it has always been his goal to one day compete in a professional weightlifting competition.

Just recently, he was able to make that goal a reality.

Ben placed 2nd at the Special Olympics State Tournament. He participated in bench press, dead lift and squats for his weightlifting competition. He had the opportunity to travel to Atlanta on January 11th and 12th to take part in the regional Special Olympics competition.

Ben won second place in bench press, dead lift, squats and overall weight. An accomplishment he achieved with a positive attitude and support from his loved ones.

“I feel kind of good and kind of nervous sometimes, but it’s okay I like it,” said Greer.

His teacher, Mackenzie Clark, has seen this sport be a positive influence in Ben's life.

“He likes being strong and likes talking about his fitness,” said Clark. “So, seeing him get involved with Special Olympics is a great opportunity for him to meet new people along with reaching some of his accomplishments that he wants to do.”

Clark credits Ben’s character for overcoming many hard obstacles to do what he loves.

“He is very determined,” said Clark. “So, if he wants to do something, he is going to figure out how to do it—whether that is in class for academics or weightlighting—which is what he loves.”

Everyone on campus admires Ben so much, that when he won his first competition, the administration had a parade in his honor.
