Life After High School: Chancellor Science Scholar earns a 4-yr Scholarship to UNC

September 07, 2016 - Student Success

Strawberry Crest High School alumnus Dalan Smallwood was one of 100 students across the world to be selected as a participant in the Chancellor’s Science Scholars (CSS) Program at the University of North Carolina (UNC).

Smallwood’s intention was to apply for a $10,000 scholarship but instead he walked away with an opportunity of a life time – a scholarship that would cover all four years of study. He impressed quite a few people with his interest in STEM, research, and his commitment to diversity that aligned with UNC’s mission and program values.  UNC’s Recruiting Coordinator, Warner Underwood stated that Dalan Smallwood was exactly what Mike Crimmins, the CSS Faculty Director was looking for in one of his future Science Scholar leaders.

While at Strawberry Crest, Smallwood played a significant role in the development of the first Science Olympiad and had continued to serve and lead fellow students in the Science Olympiad, Science Quiz Bowl, and Robotics teams.  His achievements as an IB scholar has nurtured his love for his academics and science.  Smallwood graduated with a weighted G.P.A of 7.50 and an unweighted G.P.A of 3.98. Dalan personally shared with HCPS that it is, “good to see the efforts I put forth into math and science pay off.”  In addition Dalan thanked God and the CSS staff for providing him the “opportunity to pursue my lifelong dream of becoming an Immunologist”.

Kimberly Smallwood, Dalan’s mother expressed how life altering this experience has been for Dalan and their family.  All she could do was fall to her knees and thank God; there were no words to express what she was feeling. Ms. Smallwood had to quickly adjust her schedule to help her son get ready to leave for North Carolina to participate in the required Summer EXCELerator program. The program introduces students to a collaborative approach to learning and provide students with the tools they will need to succeed.

Congratulations Dalan for all your accomplishments and making us #HCPSproud!

The Chancellor’s Science Scholars (CSS) program provides a pathway to success for highly able students who aspire to pursue both undergraduate and advanced degrees as Ph.D. and M.D.-Ph.D. scientists in our increasingly interdisciplinary world.
