This year, Lewis Elementary's Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) received two national recognitions - National Parent Group of the Year and the National PTA School of Excellence Award. PTO Today, an organization providing support for PTAs and PTOs nationwide, selected Lewis Elementary PTA from a field of 230 groups to be its 2016 National Parent Group of the Year.
According to PTO Today they were impressed by the PTA’s efforts to welcome parents and involve family members in a variety of ways, from breakfasts like the “New to Lewis Breakfast” providing translations services to fill the needs of their bilingual families, to simply supporting a new homeroom parent program through a fun game of bingo. Last year alone the PTA supported a weekly tutoring service in reading for more than 80 students through the Partner to Accelerate Learning Program (PAL). Being recognized as a National PTA School of Excellence demonstrates Lewis Elementary School’s and Lewis PTA’s commitment and leadership to supporting student success and continuous school improvement.
National PTA president Laura Bay stated, “The partnership between Lewis Elementary School and the Lewis PTA is a true example of what can be accomplished when schools and families work together. Lewis Elementary School and the Lewis PTA have put strong practices into place that involve families in the life of the school, and we are pleased to recognize them as the National PTA School of Excellence for 2016.”
National PTA launched its National PTA School of Excellence program to help strengthen family-school partnerships across the country and make measurable progress in the areas of education, health and safety and arts and cultural exploration. As a National PTA School of Excellence, families at Lewis Elementary School families feel welcomed and empowered to support student success, and PTA is a key partner for continuous school improvement.
Lewis’s PTA membership stands at more than 400, with seven board members and 32 committee chairs tackling matters like cultural and socioeconomic diversity head-on. They do so with such enthusiasm and drive that an increasing number of families at the school have responded by becoming more involved. In recognition of these efforts, PTO Today selected Lewis Elementary from a field of 230 groups as the 2016 National Parent Group of the Year to be featured in the September’s issue of PTO Today.
