The American Geographical Society (AGS) has named Ms. Kendall Nickerson of Durant High School in Plant City, Florida as a 2016 AGS Geography Teacher Fellow. She will attend this year’s annual American Geographical Society Fall Symposium, held Thursday, Nov. 17, and Friday, Nov. 18, at Columbia University in New York.
Kendall Nickerson’s dedication to providing her students an engaging class environment has not gone unnoticed. “We are very pleased to be able to have Kendall among 50 of the best teachers in the country join us in New York City in November,” said Dr. John Konarski, CEO of the American Geographical Society.
The Symposium will enable the Teacher Fellows to gain valuable cutting edge content knowledge and awareness of the real-world geographic workplace skills demanded by today’s geospatial companies. The Teacher Fellows will have a unique opportunity to interact with, and become one of, the nation’s thought-leaders who are involved in the multi-year dialog about the future of geography.
“I’m very blessed to be able to go and see this,” Nickerson said. “This is something new for me … for them to invite teachers for the first time ever and to be able to represent Durant and Hillsborough, it's a big honor.” Describing herself as “truly homegrown,” Nickerson grew up as the daughter of a strawberry farmer. She attended Durant High School.
Anastasia Tom, communications and outreach manager for the American Geographical Society, said its board voted to allow Nickerson to join as a fellow because she is a geography teacher who makes a difference.
The American Geographical Society is an organization founded to promote geographic literacy in government, business, science and education. This year’s symposium is about planet sustainability. Among those attending will be CEOs of geospatial companies, scientists, government representatives, nonprofits — and, new to this year, educators.
