District celebrates Telecommunications Appreciation Week

For the second year in a row, HCPS has designated the last week in April as Telecommunications Appreciation Week. Each day of the year, seven days a week, 24 hours a day, HCPS telecommunications technicians “answer the call” from anywhere and everywhere. They provide safety for all staff and students in response to district-wide and school-based incidents that occur both on and off campuses, school buses, and administrative sites. 

According to Lieutenant JoAnne Lykins, who oversees the schedules and routines of the Telecommunications Center, “We sometimes take for granted the importance of our dispatchers until we have a crisis and need immediate results.”  Telecommunications Technicians rotate yearly through three different shifts; 6:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m., 2:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m., and a midnight shift that begins at 10:00 p.m. and ends at 6:00 a.m.  There are several brand new trainees in the current group, but also veteran dispatchers like Lois Fahlsing and Rebecca Wright, who have both worked for over 30 years with HCPS. 

All telecommunications technicians are cross trained for both Security and Transportation dispatch.  They each receive eight weeks of training at initial hire and then receive additional training throughout the year in reference to updated platforms. Lykins is proud to add that, “All of these men and women do a fabulous job handling all the situations they encounter on a daily basis!”
