The state has directed all school districts in Florida to keep schools closed through the end of the school year due to concerns over the coronavirus. More information is available on our Coronavirus Information page.
On Monday, August 7th, the teachers at Turner/Bartels K-8 School (TBK8) participated in a professional developement experience they named HERO Camp. The theme at TBK8 this year is “Be a HERO” (Helping Each other Reach Our goals), and this was the first step in supporting one another with their own professional growth. In the words of second-grade teacher, Holly Holland, "HERO Camp is about educators sharing and learning innovative ways to engage and further meet the needs of our 21st century classrooms."
HERO Camp came to fruition after a team of teachers and leaders attended EdCamp Hillsborough and wanted to provide a similar experience for their colleagues. The team consisted of a variety of teachers, the school’s STEM coordinator and an assistant principal. This team named themselves the HERO Camp Crew and met several times over the summer to plan.
All teachers at the school participated by sharing topics they wished to learn about and those they were willing to teach one another. When all was said and done, there were over 30 sessions offered with each teacher either facilitating or participating in three sessions each. Topics varied and included student engagement, technology implementation, Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) and parent communication.
The experience was like no other professional development opportunity. The teachers came together to own their own professional growth.
“HERO Camp was empowering because all teachers were encouraged to be facilitators, engaging because teachers chose their professional development sessions, and everlasting because we, as TBK8, will continue to Help Each other Reach Our goal,” said Carolyn Daly, a sixth-grade teacher.
Principal, Cindy M. Land, is proud of the work of her amazing teachers and impressed at how they own their own professional learning. Land would like to personally thank the members of HERO Camp Crew: Nicole Anderson, Lexus Bontrager, Stacy Cervone, Carolyn Daly, Carrie Donatelli, Holly Holland, Melissa McGlone, Courtney Taylor, Nicole Tuminella.
