Plant City High School was transformed into the fictitious Arabian city of Agrabah for the production of the dual language version of Aladdin. Curtains were drawn to reveal breathtaking costumes and impressive set designs. It has been an unbelievable ride for the theater students at Plant City High School (PCHS) since guest director Carla Plummer, an English teacher at PCHS, first approached the theater department with the idea of creating a bilingual production of Disney’s Aladdin.
One year later, PCHS presented the classic in a way the community had never seen it, in both English and Spanish. Disney's editing of this beloved fairytale to accommodate the Spanish dialogue makes the story new for every viewer.
With a large percentage of students at PCHS speaking both English and Spanish, this performance was a way to honor the community and those who live, learn and work in Plant City.
“Ms. Plummer had such fire and passion about the possibilities and pulled everyone into her vision,” said Audrey Schmidt, theater teacher at PCHS.
Students and teachers believe that putting on this dual language production, and highlighting the importance behind it, was influential in winning a $10,000 grant from NBCUniversal.
The Plant City community truly came together to support this vision and show, from PCHS clubs, families and staff to pizza donations from Nick’s and Marco’s, and Durant High School donating microphones. It could not have been done without the generosity of so many.
“Plant City is diverse in cultures and language which is what makes us strong and exceptional. The show illustrates how bringing languages together to make art is truly beautiful. It is a lesson we can all learn from as we celebrate differences and embrace bonds that unite,” Plummer said.
Ticket sales from this production will go towards next year's production of Little Shop of Horrors and help send students to competitions.
