Hillsborough County Public Schools Climbs to new Heights with the Grand Opening of the Dr. Carter G. Woodson PK-8 School and Leadership Academy

Tampa, Fla. – (August 9, 2018) – Superintendent Jeff Eakins, School Board members, students, teachers, district leaders and community partners will be on hand to celebrate the hard work that took place during the summer to create a one-of-a-kind school for the community, with the grand opening of the Dr. Carter G. Woodson PK-8 School and Leadership Academy.

Where: Carter G. Woodson PK-8 School (8715 North 22nd Street, Tampa, FL 33604)
Who: Superintendent Jeff Eakins, Deputy Superintendent of Operations Chris Farkas, School Board members, Principal Ovett Wilson, Tyna Middleton with the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH), Representatives from Williams Company who completed the construction of the upper and lower campus, and Long and Associates who handled the Architecture and Engineering.
Visual opportunities: Interviews with district leaders, builder and designer, ASALH representative, portrait reveal, ribbon cutting and first look at the renovations.
This is an opportunity for the community to see the re-design of this breathtaking campus thanks to the dedication of district employees, Williams Company and Long and Associates. A ribbon cutting will take place in the newly created outdoor learning amphitheater after a brief presentation in the cafeteria. Special Guest Speaker, Tyna Middleton with the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH) will present the school with a Dr. Carter G. Woodson flag and a portrait reveal of Dr. Carter G. Woodson will be gifted to the school by the Dr. Carter G. Woodson African American Museum located in St. Petersburg. Guests will also have the opportunity to tour the new bus ramp terminal and classrooms that have been updated with new technology for innovative learning.
This prestigious academy was named after Dr. Carter G. Woodson, known to many as the founder of Black History Month and founder of ASALH. The school will provide the Woodson Wolves with opportunities to grow academically, emotionally, and socially. The administration and faculty at Dr. Carter G. Woodson PK-8 School and Leadership Academy is dedicated to building a strong culture of learning, and will provide constant support for families and the community in which these students live— when each student succeeds, the school succeeds, and the community thrives. Students will have the opportunity to experience rigorous course work, keynote speakers, and an animal care institute. They will also be trained in the 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens (Upper campus) and The Leader in Me framework (lower campus).
